Mathematical modeling of a vehicle crash test based on elasto-plastic unloading scenarios of spring-mass models

2011

Published version of an article in the journal: The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher on SpringerLink: htp://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-010-3056-x This paper investigates the usability of spring which exhibit nonlinear force-deflection characteristic in the area of mathematical modeling of vehicle crash. We present a method which allows us to obtain parameters of the spring-mass model basing on the full-scale experimental data analysis. Since vehicle collision is a dynamic event, it involves such phenomena as rebound and energy dissipation. Three different spring unloading scenarios (elastic, plastic, and elasto-plastic) are covered…

Tulka un tulkotāja profesiju atspoguļojums Latvijas plašsaziņas līdzekļos 2014.gadā

2015

Conceptualizing Online Discussion Value: A Multidimensional Framework for Analyzing User Comments on Mass-Media Websites

2013

This chapter provides a micro-framework for analyzing the quantity and quality of online user comments on mass-media websites. On one dimension, news factors of news items and discussion factors of existing user comments are assumed to indicate the relevance of participating in online discussions. On a second dimension, specific motivational, social, and design factors are influential when reconstructing users’ decisions to participate in online discussions and when analyzing the content of online user comments. The two dimensions in combination describe the discussion value of news items. Potential applications of this framework on other forms of interpersonal communication are discussed.

Media constructions of fear in the outbreak of an epidemic disease

2016

Purpose – After almost a decade, the re-appearance of dengue fever in Argentina caused panic and fears. Unlike Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, where prevention policies have been followed, the future of dengue is uncertain in Argentina; the present paper does not have political affiliation but the purpose of this paper is to emphasizes the role that mass media plays in the coverage of epidemics. Design/methodology/approach – In moments of disorder, uncertainness or disaster, societies experience a shift in the ways they perceive their reality. Findings – In the times, media plays a dominant role in constructing the reality that the authors get to consume. Such reality is reflective of media’…

Adsorbents and columns in analytical high-performance liquid chromatography: A perspective with regard to development and understanding

2012

A brief historical survey is presented on the evaluation of silica adsorbents in analytical HPLC. The theory of analytical HPLC is mostly still being based on the height equivalent to a theoretical plate concept and the van Deemter equation that was derived from gas phase adsorption involving a linear adsorption isotherm and fast mass transfer kinetics. One can obviously wonder whether the use of the van Deemter equation is relevant and valid for the evaluation of the performance of HPLC systems, where most often the liquid solutes involve charged molecules in electrolytes and in very many cases the adsorbates are macromolecules having diffusion coefficients of small magnitude. Instead of t…

Is the formation of a zeolite from a dry powder via a gas phase transport process possible?

1994

Abstract ZSM-5 was synthesized by four methods with a gradually decreasing water content ending in a reaction mixture with absolutely dry reagents in the form of a powder in the complete absence of a solution phase. Amorphous precursors obtained by drying SiO2·A2O3 gels at 650°C were transformed into zeolites in the presence of dried NH4F and TPABr. Some water is probably formed as a reaction product, but the maximum water pressure is appreciably below the saturation pressure under the given reaction conditions. To explain the formation of a zeolite, we suggest a vapor phase mass transfer process with SiF4 as the mobile species between the solid phase, which contains the amorphous Si/Al pre…

Vocabulary Gains of Mono- and Multilingual Learners in a Linguistically Diverse Setting: Results From a German-English Intervention With Inclusion of…

2018

Today, group settings (e.g., in kindergarten) are more linguistically-diverse than ever. However, concepts in language acquisition only rarely include this fact. This paper reports on the effects of a language intervention which is based on a concept specifically designed for linguistically-diverse settings („PROgramme for BI- and MUltilingual Children“; Festman and Rinker, 2014). The implementation of the programme and its outcomes are described with the example of a German-English-immersion kindergarten, which was in fact plurilingual. We aimed at supporting children’s acquisition of the two languages in parallel with inclusion of their home languages. Overall, 52 (mono-, bi-, and triling…

Cross-hemispheric transport of central African biomass burning pollutants: implications for downwind ozone production

2010

Pollutant plumes with enhanced concentrations of trace gases and aerosols were observed over the southern coast of West Africa during August 2006 as part of the AMMA wet season field campaign. Plumes were observed both in the mid and upper troposphere. In this study we examined the origin of these pollutant plumes, and their potential to photochemically produce ozone (O3) downwind over the Atlantic Ocean. Their possible contribution to the Atlantic O3 maximum is also discussed. Runs using the BOLAM mesoscale model including biomass burning carbon monoxide (CO) tracers were used to confirm an origin from central African biomass burning fires. The…

Transfer of aroma compounds in water-lipid systems: binding tendency of beta-lactoglobulin.

1998

Interactions of volatile aroma compounds with protein in aqueous solutions, especially whey proteins, have received significant attention in recent years. This work attempts to improve our understanding of the mass transfer in multiphasic systems, such as emulsions at the lipid−water interface, and to reveal the role of β-lactoglobulin in the release rate of solutes. For this purpose the rotating diffusion cell has been used. From a practical point of view it enables evaluation of the transfer through the aqueous phase, through the oil and the interfacial transfer. The effect of β-lactoglobulin, medium pH, and solute concentration has been investigated. Benzaldehyde and 2-nonanone have been…
